Town of Fort Erie Official Plan Approved by the Province

The Town of Fort Erie has reached a major planning milestone, becoming the first local municipality in the Niagara Region to receive provincial approval for a new Official Plan.

Approved by the Province of Ontario, the new plan will guide growth and development in Fort Erie through to 2051, outlining updated policies for housing, employment, land use, infrastructure, environmental protection, agriculture, cultural heritage and community planning.

Mayor Wayne Redekop said the approval marks an important step forward for the municipality.

“This is an important milestone for Fort Erie. Being the first municipality in Niagara Region to receive provincial approval of a new Official Plan speaks to the commitment, professionalism, and forward-thinking approach of Council and staff. It is also an affirmation that Fort Erie is firmly on the Province’s radar. This plan gives Fort Erie a clear path to manage growth, protect what makes our community special and prepare for our future.”

The Official Plan is considered one of the Town’s most significant planning documents, helping shape decisions related to development, transportation, housing, employment lands, environmental stewardship and community services.

Edward Terry, Manager of Policy and Community Planning for the Town, said the new framework reflects both local priorities and provincial direction.

“The new Official Plan provides a strong policy foundation that reflects Fort Erie’s local needs while aligning with provincial and regional planning direction. I want to extend my sincere appreciation to all staff and contributors who supported the project throughout. Their input, expertise, and commitment were essential to completing this important work for the community.”

The updated plan also supports the Town’s vision for complete, connected and sustainable communities while balancing growth with quality of life and infrastructure planning.

Anamika Dilwaria, Director of Planning and Development Services, said the approval provides clarity for future development in the community.

“This is a major achievement for the Planning and Development Services team and for the Town as a whole. The approval of the new Official Plan positions Fort Erie to move forward with clarity and confidence. It gives residents, businesses, developers, and community partners a modern planning framework that supports well-managed growth.”

The Official Plan review process included public consultation and technical analysis to ensure the document reflected the evolving needs of the community. Provincial approval confirms the plan is consistent with provincial policy and conforms with the Planning Act.

Chief Administrative Officer Chris McQueen thanked staff, council and community members for their contributions to the project.

“The modernized new Official Plan supports the Town’s ability to plan responsibly, attract investment, and deliver on Council’s priorities. I want to thank staff, Council, community members, and all partners who contributed to this important work.”

The Town says the final consolidated version of the Official Plan, including all approved modifications, will be posted on its website in the coming weeks.
