Dalhousie Tigers men’s basketball head coach is pleased to announce the commitment of Caleb and Riley Stewart for the 2023-24 season.
Twins, the 6’6 forwards hail from Stevensville, Ontario. This past season the Stewarts have been playing for the Supreme Hoops Canada East basketball club and won the 2022 Basketball Stars of America Tournament, 2022 ONL-X Chris Paulin Memorial Tournament, and the 2023 Hoop Crown Tournament. In the summer of 2022, they played All-In Basketball and won a silver medal at the Phoenix Classic Men’s Basketball Summer Tournament.
Before Supreme Hoops Canada, they played for the Niagara Rangers of the Ontario Basketball League Excellence (OBL-X) league featuring the top eight teams in Ontario. The Stewarts and their Niagara Rangers teammates won a silver medal in the Ontario Basketball Association Division 1 Championship at the end of the 2021-22 season.
They have also been successful on the court with their Eden High School team, winning the 2022 Jacob Ranton Memorial High School Tournament and the 2022 Georgetown AAA High School Boys Basketball Tournament in addition to being finalists in the 2022 Standard High School Boys Basketball Tournament and the 2023 Welland Tribune High School Boys Basketball Tournament.
Riley was named the 2021-22 Eden High School Senior Boys Basketball team MVP and was named a tournament all-star at the Phoenix Classic in summer 2022. Caleb was named the defensive player of the tournament and a first team all-star at the Welland Tribune tournament. Both were on the list of 145 nominated players for the BioSteel All-Canadian Basketball Game.
“I am excited to come to Dalhousie and play for the Tigers as I think it is a great opportunity to become a better basketball player,” says Riley. “I’m looking forward to learning from Coach Plato, experiencing the great facilities, and being a part of a competitive team all while furthering my education at a strong academic institution.”
“I am incredibly excited about my commitment to Dalhousie University,” says Caleb. “This school has a successful background not just in its athletics but also in its academics. Learning from Coach Plato, being a part of a well established program, and joining a successful team will provide me with the best opportunity to become a better basketball player and a better student.”
“It is with great pleasure that I welcome Riley and Caleb to the Dalhousie Tiger family,” says Plato. “These brothers bring a dynamic package of diverse skills on the court, basketball IQ, and energy. Caleb and Riley possess the total package as recruits. They can be outside threats, tenacious on defence, are strong rebounders and have a winning attitude. Off the court, they are excellent students and great people. I believe that they will make an immediate impact.”
Both Riley and Caleb have been on the Principal’s List all four years of high school for earning an average above 90%. Riley will be studying kinesiology and Caleb will be working towards a Bachelor of Arts while at Dalhousie.
The Tigers finished the AUS regular season in third place in 2022-23.
