Niagara Parks has implemented a temporary one-lane closure along the Niagara Parkway adjacent to the Fort Erie breakwall, just south of the Peace Bridge, to support ongoing shoreline protection work and improve the safe movement of construction vehicles. Construction is expected to continue through late October 2026.
Traffic Considerations
To improve safety and reduce delays, one lane of the Niagara Parkway is temporarily closed through the construction zone. Previously, traffic was periodically stopped to allow trucks carrying large rock materials to back into the shoreline work site. Under the current traffic plan, trucks can now stage within the closed lane and enter the work zone without stopping traffic.
As a result, motorists can expect fewer interruptions, improved traffic flow and enhanced safety by reducing the need for trucks to back across multiple traffic lanes. Traffic control measures, including a flagging operation, remain in place to safely direct vehicles through the area. Drivers are asked to use caution, follow posted signage and allow extra space for construction crews and equipment.
About the Fort Erie Shoreline Project
This work is part of Niagara Parks’ Shoreline Protection Strategy, launched in 2025 to strengthen the shoreline, adjacent parkland and recreational trails against severe weather and erosion. During the first phase, Niagara Parks repaired a section of breakwall behind Mather Arch Park, just south of the Peace Bridge, and restored damaged sections of the Niagara River Recreation Trail between Old Fort Erie and Mather Arch.
Building on that work, the 2026 construction season focuses on additional breakwall repairs and reinforcements, including the installation of in-water rock protection to absorb wave energy, reduce erosion and strengthen the shoreline for the future.
