Santa’s Surfing Streak: 40 Years of Waves and Warmth

Keasha Maile, FEO, December 19, 2024, VOL. 6 ISSUE 8

Fort Erie’s Surfing Santa, John Fulton, is celebrating a remarkable milestone this December 23rd as he celebrates 40 years of surfing across the Niagara River to raise money for homeless individuals in the Niagara region. This annual event has become a cherished tradition, blending holiday spirit with community support.

It all began in 1985 when Fulton, then a windsurfing instructor at Sherkston Shores, was inspired during an unseasonably warm day in November. “Harry Rosatani came to the gym downtown Fort Erie looking for fit members for a windsurfing photo shoot,” Fulton recalls. “I volunteered, and the Buffalo News ended up running a half-page story with a shot of me windsurfing by the Peace Bridge. A month later, the idea of Surfing Santa just popped into my head. It was a breezy, cold December day, and I thought, what a great way to promote windsurfing and spread some holiday cheer.”

That same year, Fulton borrowed a vintage Santa suit and enlisted the help of a videographer friend to capture the spectacle. What began as a promotional stunt soon transformed into a heartfelt mission to give back to the community. Each year, dressed as Santa, Fulton braves the icy waters of the Niagara River to raise funds and awareness for homelessness.

Over the years, the event has drawn a dedicated following. “It’s incredible how the community has rallied around this cause,” says Fulton. “Every dollar donated goes directly to helping those in need, and seeing the impact we’ve made together is what keeps me going.” Donations can be made through his Amazon page at www.surfingsanta.com.

Fulton’s preparation for the event is no small feat. “I stay fit year-round with core workouts and paddling during the summer,” he shares. “Winter surfing is definitely part of my routine as it helps me acclimatize to the cold conditions.”

As Surfing Santa celebrates its 40th anniversary, Fulton reflects on the journey. “What started as a fun idea has become a meaningful tradition. It’s not just about me; it’s about everyone who supports the event and believes in making a difference.”

This December 23rd, spectators are invited to witness Surfing Santa’s daring ride across the river and join in supporting a cause that embodies the spirit of giving. Whether you’re cheering from the shore or donating online, the event is a reminder of the power of community and compassion during the holiday season.
