Friday, September 12, the Port Colborne Sailors kicked off their GOJHL Regular Season at home with an impressive 4-2 victory over the visiting Brantford Titans.
Finding the home confines of the Vale Health and Wellness Centre to their liking, the Sailors outshot the Titans by a 31-20 margin. Port Colborne was 1 for 6 on the power play while Brantford was 0 for 3.
The first period saw both teams get on the board twice. Port Colborne opened the scoring with a power-play marker by Ian Robinson, his first of 3 in the game. Brantford tied it up five minutes later on a goal by Tyson Papple and then took the lead on a goal by Adam Stipan. The Sailors scored a key goal by Hunter Vilanez with only 47 seconds remaining in the period to tie it up.
The second period did not see any scoring, but both Goaltenders were stellar. James Gall from Brantford and JD Low from Port Colborne came up with several key saves to keep their teams in the game.
The third period turned into the “Ian Robinson Show.” Robinson scored at 6:58 of the period to put the Sailors ahead. Branford had a huge chance to get back in the game as they had a 2-man advantage with 5 minutes remaining in the game. Still, the Sailors were able to hold off the onslaught and eventually put the game away on Robinson’s empty net goal with just over a minute to play.
