It’s been called one of the fastest-growing sports in North America, and at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 230, it’s quickly becoming a community favourite.
This winter marked the launch of the Legion’s first-ever cornhole league, drawing strong participation and even stronger community spirit. Over the course of 10 weeks, 16 teams gathered every Tuesday evening for friendly competition, food, drinks, and plenty of camaraderie. While bragging rights were on the line, organizers say the real win has been the sense of connection the league has created.
“You’ve got 64 team members playing, but close to 100 people in total when you include those who come out to cheer everyone on,” said organizer Pam Smith. “There’s been no arguments, really, it’s all high fives and ‘good games.’”
Smith, a newer member of the Legion, stepped up to organize the league while also managing the popular 50/50 draws. She credits the program’s success to its welcoming and supportive atmosphere.
“Everyone is so helpful,” she said. “Cornhole starts at 6, and by 9 o’clock everybody is pitching in to put the room back in order.”
The winter season wrapped up last week, with Team Air Bus claiming top honours after a hard-fought final against the Holy Baggers.
The league has proven so popular that registration for the spring session, running from April through June, filled up quickly, once again capping at 16 teams. Organizers are already looking ahead to the next session, set to begin in October.
Participants have ranged in age from their 20s to over 70, highlighting the sport’s inclusive and accessible nature.
