With the current poor air quality affecting Fort Erie, it’s important to remember that our pets can be impacted too. Smoke and fine particles can irritate their eyes, nose, throat, and lungs, just as they do for people.

Here are some ways to help keep your pets safe:

• Keep dogs and cats indoors as much as possible.
• Limit walks and outdoor play. Keep dog walks short and avoid strenuous exercise until the air quality improves.
• Ensure your pets always have access to fresh, clean water.
• Keep windows and doors closed if possible, and use air conditioning or an air purifier if you have one.
• Watch for signs of smoke irritation, including:
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Excessive panting
  • Red or watery eyes
  • Nasal discharge
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness
• Pets with heart or lung conditions, senior pets, puppies, kittens, and flat-faced breeds (such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persian cats) may be especially sensitive to poor air quality.

If your pet shows persistent breathing difficulties or appears distressed, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
