September 15, 2023, Metroland made headlines by announcing the discontinuation of over 70 weekly local newspaper publications, resulting in the unfortunate loss of over 600 jobs and their pursuit of bankruptcy protection. The reality of that hit many when they went to retrieve their paper from the end of the driveways this week.
Metroland’s move towards digital news has sparked disapproval among numerous local residents. A particular point of contention arises from the suspension of the flyer pack delivery that accompanied the newspaper.
We share in the sorrow of those affected by these layoffs and commend the dedication of individuals who have been friends and colleagues for decades. We stand in solidarity with you all.
It’s important to clarify that the Fort Erie Observer operates independently and remains unaffected by the changes at Metroland. We recognize the vital role community-driven news plays and understand that our readers in Greater Fort Erie share this sentiment.
Community newspapers, especially those independently owned, have a distinct focus on content. Our mission is to provide our readers with news not typically covered by major publications. We offer a grassroots perspective and establish personal, face-to-face relationships with our readers, local businesses, and communities.
Local newspapers are integral to the fabric of our communities. They provide businesses with a platform to advertise to their local market and keep residents informed about developments in their schools, legions, community groups, and town halls.
Since our beginnings in 2019, the Fort Erie Observer has aimed to cover the entire Greater Fort Erie Area with delivery through Canada Post. While the media landscape evolves with various news sources, many of our residents still rely on print, finding comfort in holding a physical newspaper. For those seeking news about Greater Fort Erie, the Observer remains a reliable source.
Expanding a small business, as many of you understand, comes with risks. We have been fortunate since our inception and are now taking the leap to expand further. September 2023 marked our fourth-year anniversary and we are thrilled to announce that we will now deliver our bi-weekly Fort Erie Observer to the entire Canada Post market in Fort Erie, Ridgeway, Stevensville, Crystal Beach, and Sherkston. We will also maintain drop-off locations at many local stores.
While large, corporate-owned dailies may focus on provincial or national news through subscription models, and online media continues to grow, we remain committed to bringing you stories, photos, and information about local community events, people, history, and businesses. You can expect to find this information both in your mailbox and available for pickup at local businesses.
Our commitment to serving our community through print remains unwavering, and we look forward to continuing this journey with you, our dedicated readers.
