The Ontario Bakery was demolished on June 22. It’s a step in progress that has been called “bittersweet” by those who resided in the Fort Erie area during the glory days of the bakery along Niagara Boulevard.
Closed in 2012, the building has vacant and a visual obstacle for any driver trying to pull out of the bottom of Catherine Street, onto the Niagara Boulevard, for years. Some confessed they used to look through the windows of the building to see if there was any traffic coming. Once boarded up, it was harder to see,
However, when looking back, reviews claimed it was the best bread in the world. Many can recall childhood memories of stopping at the bakery “and the amazing smell of the warm bread on the way home in the car”, several have expressed, that smell can almost be experienced now.
The Fort Erie Planning and Development office commented that no definite plans have yet been declared for the newly vacant property.
