MYAC: A Year of Impact, Energy, and Youth Leadership

Keasha Maile, FEO, May 29, 2025, VOL. 6 ISSUE 19

At the May 12 Council-in-Committee meeting, members of Fort Erie’s Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) gave an enthusiastic presentation outlining the committee’s achievements, goals, and continued efforts to support and connect with youth in the community.

Chair McKenzie Arts delivered a detailed report on the wide range of activities MYAC has been involved in over the past year, from festive events to social advocacy. Among the highlights were a pumpkin decorating contest, letters to Santa, multiple free skates, and two successful tween dances held at the Boys and Girls Club. One of MYAC’s creative touches included lighting the Peace Bridge in the winning school’s colours for their pumpkin contest.

MYAC’s initiatives also extend to community service and environmental stewardship. Members organized an Earth Day cleanup at Sugar Bowl Park, helped with the Town’s tree giveaway, and planted ten trees at the Stevensville Conservation Area. Their social media campaign offered daily environmental tips in April.

In February, members participated in the Everyday Influencer Conference, connecting with youth leaders from across Niagara. They also recently attended the G-Fest Culture Night to celebrate diversity in Fort Erie. The committee has also supported town-wide initiatives like the solar eclipse food drive and established a strong presence at local events, including the Santa Claus Parade and G-Fest’s open house.

“Last year, we had a long list of goals,” said McKenzie. “And with the support of Council, the community, and our growing committee, we’re proud to say we’ve achieved many of them.”

Among its upcoming efforts, MYAC is planning its second annual Youth Talent Showcase on June 11 at Leisureplex Banquet Hall, featuring youth art displays, performances, and family-friendly activities. In June, it is also launching an elementary school food drive competition, with all donations going to COPE (Community Outreach Program Erie).

Looking ahead, the committee hopes to build event consistency, strengthen ties with local schools, and continue amplifying youth leadership.

Mayor Wayne Redekop praised the committee’s tireless dedication, noting, “The number of activities you’ve taken on and the growing profile you’ve built in the community is fantastic. This is, without a doubt, the most active Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee we’ve ever had.”

As MYAC’s current chair prepares to move on, Council expressed gratitude for the positive example the committee continues to set and its vital role in shaping Fort Erie’s future.

There are no upcoming events at this time.
