The Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport became a hub of excitement and discovery on August 24 as the highly anticipated Discover Aviation event unfolded, hosted by COPA Flight 149. The event welcomed young aviation enthusiasts and their families to a day dedicated to exploring the wonders of flight, marking yet another successful chapter in this annual tradition.
This year’s Discover Aviation event attracted over 100 participants eager to experience the thrill of flight. This annual event, now a staple in the local aviation calendar, continues to ignite a passion for flying among youth aged 8 to 20.
Doug Riley, pilot with COPA and Discover Aviation Coordinator said over the past two years, more than 200 young people have been introduced to aviation through this initiative.
“It’s a chance for young people to discover the whole world of aviation, especially the older kids in their late teens early 20s, because they’re looking for something to do in life. There are so many careers in aviation, not just flying.” He exclaimed, remembering one of the attendees from last year who was inspired to go to University for aeronautical engineering.
The day began with a comprehensive mini ground school, where participants were given an up-close introduction to the fundamentals of aviation. This session was designed to educate the young aviators on the various components of an aircraft and the principles that allow it to fly. With a focus on hands-on learning, the ground school provided an engaging start to the day, setting the stage for the adventures to come.
Complementing the ground school was a static display featuring a couple of aircraft that participants could explore. This display allowed the young aviators to familiarize themselves with the planes they would soon be flying in, adding to their understanding and excitement. For many, this was the first time they had the chance to interact so closely with an aircraft, sparking a deep interest in aviation.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the discovery flights. Each participant was treated to a 20-minute flight, offering a bird’s-eye view of the Welland Canal, the Lake Erie shoreline, and the surrounding towns. These flights, piloted by the experienced members of COPA Flight 149, were the culmination of the day’s events and provided a thrilling and memorable experience for all involved.
“My favourite thing about the day is seeing the smiles! The one time we got up there, and the whole 20 minutes just straight giggles from the kids.” Riley added as he watched pilots take off one after another with eager passengers excited to get off the ground.
Looking ahead, COPA Flight 149 is already planning for the 2025 edition of Discover Aviation. With a “First Dibs” list already forming, next year’s event promises to build on the success of this year, continuing to offer young people the opportunity to experience the magic of flight. As the sun set on August 24, the skies above Niagara were filled not just with planes, but with the dreams of future aviators.
