A local initiative aimed at tackling the rising cost of hearing aids is bringing Fort Erie residents together for an open community discussion next month.
The NDP Niagara South Federal Riding Association is backing a free informational meeting on May 11 at 1 p.m. hosted at the Fort Erie Lions Senior Centre, inviting residents to learn more about what organizers describe as a growing affordability concern, particularly for seniors and individuals living on fixed incomes.
The session will focus on the increasing price of hearing aids, which can range from approximately $3,000 for basic models to more than $5,000 for advanced devices, even with support from the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). Organizers say these costs can place a significant burden on those who rely on hearing aids to stay connected and maintain their quality of life.
The meeting will provide an overview of how the hearing aid market operates, including a discussion around limited competition and the challenges consumers face when seeking lower-cost alternatives. Attendees will also hear about emerging options in other countries, such as over-the-counter devices in the United States, and why similar solutions are not widely available in Canada.
In addition to outlining the issue, the Niagara South Federal Riding Association hopes to engage the community in shaping a path forward. Organizers plan to share details about a proposed Hearing Aid Initiative that will focus on research, outreach, and advocacy to improve affordability and access.
“This is about starting a conversation and giving people the opportunity to be part of it,” organizers note. “We want to hear directly from those affected and work together toward practical solutions.”
The event is open to all members of the public, and no donations will be requested or accepted. Instead, the focus will remain on education, discussion, and building community awareness around an issue that continues to impact many households.
Residents interested in learning more about hearing aid accessibility and contributing their voice to the conversation are encouraged to attend.
May 11 at 1 p.m. at the Fort Erie Lions Senior Centre
