GFESS Teacher Honoured with Director’s Recognition Award

Keasha Maile, FEO, April 17, 2025, VOL. 6 ISSUE 16

Greater Fort Erie Secondary School (GFESS) teacher Mr. Jason Sider has been awarded the prestigious Director’s Recognition Award, a distinction that highlights not only his dedication to education but also the growing importance of technological education in schools.

“While it is an honour to be recognized as a teacher, it is encouraging to see that Technological Education as a whole is being recognized,” Sider said. With a background in the skilled trades, Sider has brought real-world experience into the classroom, helping students see the vast opportunities that await them in technology and trades. “Entering the teaching field with a background in the skilled trades has given me a unique perspective on the endless opportunities available to students,” he explained.

Sider is passionate about preparing students for their futures, both in and out of the classroom. A highlight of his year is helping GFESS students compete in the DSBN Technological Skills Challenges. “These challenges provide a platform for students to apply their knowledge, problem-solving skills, and hands-on expertise,” he said. Through competitions in areas such as robotics, welding, coding, construction, photography, and video production, students develop technical skills and build confidence. “The challenges not only help students develop and refine their technical skills but also promote innovation, teamwork, and critical thinking,” Sider added.

Many of Sider’s students have gone on to compete at the provincial and national levels, something he takes great pride in. “By participating, students gain real-world experience, prepare for future careers, and often discover their passions and future pathways,” he noted.

Looking to the future, Sider is eager to continue evolving GFESS’s technology programs. “As I reflect on my role and its potential impact on the future of technological education here at GFESS, I see myself as part of a larger movement to inspire and empower the next generation of students to explore and excel in technological fields,” he said.

His goal is to make learning engaging and relevant. “I aim to continuously improve and adapt educational opportunities for students by integrating cutting-edge technologies and real-world applications into the classroom,” he explained. “All while having a little fun.”

Sider remains committed to fostering an environment where students feel supported and encouraged. “I want students to know they have a solid support system and resources to help them succeed,” he affirmed.
