Fort Erie Seniors Step Out to Give Back and Connect

Keasha Maile, FEO, June 26, 2025, VOL. 6 ISSUE 21

The Fort Erie Senior Citizens’ Advisory Committee hosted its free annual Seniors Stepping Out! event on June 14, offering more than 200 local seniors a chance to connect, socialize, and explore volunteer opportunities within the community.

The event, held both indoors and outdoors, featured 34 local organizations, including the Alzheimer’s Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Legion, Rotary Club, Garrison Place, and the Historical Society, who were on hand to meet residents and discuss volunteer roles. The initiative focused on encouraging residents aged 55 and over to explore ways they can give back to their community in meaningful ways.

“It’s about connecting services with seniors, and helping them find roles that suit their individual interests,” said Deborah Fairlie, secretary of the Fort Erie Senior Citizens’ Advisory Committee. “Everyone has something different to offer, and this event gives them a chance to see where they fit in.”

A total of 168 free lunches and 247 beverages were served to local residents, with food provided by two community favourites, Purple Perk and The Red Chip Wagon. While the event was free for residents of Greater Fort Erie, non-residents were welcome to attend and purchase lunch.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees praised the event’s welcoming atmosphere, the diverse volunteer opportunities, and the social element. Many appreciated the food truck offerings, and some even suggested healthier options for next year, feedback the committee will take to heart when planning.

Each year, a survey helps organizers shape the following year’s event. “We listen to our seniors,” said Fairlie. “This is their event.”

Seniors Stepping Out! remains the only fully funded, no-cost event hosted by the committee each year, designed to support local seniors while fostering intergenerational connections and community involvement.
