The Town of Fort Erie is marking Earth Day with a forward-thinking investment in cleaner transportation, unveiling new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the community.
Announced on April 22, 2026, the initiative brings four new double-headed charging stations online, adding a total of eight charging ports for public use. The project was made possible through funding support from Aviva and Earth Day Canada as part of the Charged for Change program.
Residents and visitors can now conveniently charge their vehicles at four key locations throughout Fort Erie: Town Hall Parking Lot (1 Municipal Centre Drive), Crystal Beach Parking Lot (4168 Erie Road), Crystal Ridge Public Library and Arena (89 Ridge Road South), and the Jarvis Street Public Parking Lot (97 Jarvis Street).
The installation is another step forward in the Town’s Climate Change Action Plan, a long-term strategy aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening sustainable infrastructure, and preparing the community for the impacts of a changing climate. Designed as a living framework, the plan continues to evolve while building on initiatives such as expanding EV use, enhancing natural assets, and improving energy efficiency across municipal operations.
Mayor Wayne Redekop says the new infrastructure reflects a clear commitment to sustainability and responsible growth.
“These new EV charging stations are a practical step forward in delivering on Council’s Strategic Plan,” said Redekop. “They expand access to clean transportation, support environmental responsibility, and position Fort Erie for sustainable growth. This project reflects our commitment towards a greener, more resilient community for residents to enjoy.”
Chief Administrative Officer Chris McQueen emphasized the broader impact of the investment, noting it supports both residents and tourism.
“Investing in electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the Town is important to address our commitment to environmental stewardship,” said McQueen. “These new chargers support residents who are making the switch to electric vehicles, but also position our community as a welcoming destination for visitors and travellers to Fort Erie.”
The project also highlights strong collaboration within municipal departments and with external partners. Anamika Dilwaria, Director of Planning and Development Services, credited staff efforts in bringing the initiative to life.
“This project reflects the strong collaboration and dedication of our Planning and Development Services team,” said Dilwaria. “Staff worked across departments and with funding partners to deliver high-quality infrastructure that meets the changing needs of our community. Their efforts helped move this project from concept to completion in a way that aligns with our sustainability goals.”
The EV charging expansion aligns with the Town’s 2023–2026 Strategic Plan, particularly its Environmental and Climate Change Resiliency pillar, which focuses on proactive measures to protect natural assets, address climate challenges, and build a more sustainable future.
As more drivers make the shift toward electric vehicles, Fort Erie’s growing charging network signals the community is ready to meet that demand, while taking meaningful steps toward a cleaner, greener tomorrow.
