The Fort Erie Optimist Club celebrated local youth during its annual Youth Appreciation Awards and supper held May 21, recognizing students from schools across Fort Erie for their leadership, character and positive attitudes.
The long-running event, which has been taking place for at least 20 years, honours students in Grades 7 and 8 who demonstrate strong character and an optimistic outlook. Each student received a certificate and a small bursary to put toward their education.
Optimist Club President Lucille Cashman said the award recognizes an “all-around good student who exemplifies an optimist outlook.”
Teachers from each participating school introduced their selected student and spoke about the qualities that made them stand out. Throughout the evening, recurring themes included character, leadership, kindness, respect, responsibility, integrity, positivity and dedication.
Club member Candice Cashman-Wiess explained that teachers are responsible for choosing the student they feel best represents those values within their school community.
The evening also highlighted the work of the Optimist Club itself, which is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Established in 1975 and located on Gilmore Road, the club’s mission is focused on “providing hope and positive vision and bringing out the best in kids.”
Cashman-Wiess noted the club currently has about 17 active members and is always welcoming new volunteers interested in supporting youth programs and community initiatives.
Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop attended the event and praised both the students and the volunteers who continue to support young people in the community.
“We are very grateful that we can recognize our youth; this is a great way to start them off,” said Redekop.
He also encouraged students to remember the people who helped them along the way.
“Don’t forget where you came from, don’t forget those along the way who helped you to achieve the things that you achieved,” he said.
Students recognized during the evening included Briayden Buonocore from St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School, Victoria Colbourne from Stevensville Public School, Imogene Reitboeck from John Brant Public School, Maverick Kropf from Our Lady of Victory Catholic Elementary School, Dylan Cirasolo from St. Philomena Catholic Elementary School, Dan Corneille from Peace Bridge Public School, Morayo Olowoyeye from St. George Catholic Elementary School, Henry Dill from Garrison Road Public School and Dev Trivedi from Fort Erie International Academy.
Wrapping up the evening, Redekop shared a message of confidence in the next generation.
“As I went around the room and met all the youth being recognized here tonight, I can tell that our future is in good hands.”
