Fort Erie Mourns the Passing of Burdett “Burd” Sisler at 110

Jen Wilkinson

The Fort Erie community is mourning the loss of one of its most extraordinary residents, Burdett “Burd” Sisler, who passed away peacefully on April 2 at the age of 110.

Sisler was recognized as Canada’s oldest living person. His son, Norm Sisler, shared that he died of natural causes, surrounded by the legacy of a long and meaningful life.

Known for his kindness, warm personality, and gift for storytelling, Sisler was a well-loved and familiar figure in the community. To many, he symbolised a living connection to history, having experienced more than a century of significant global and local changes.

Born on April 14, 1915, in Akron, Ohio, during the First World War, Sisler moved to Canada at age three, the same year the Spanish flu pandemic swept across the globe. His life would go on to reflect both resilience and service.

A veteran of the Second World War, Sisler served as a radar technician and technical sergeant, contributing to Canada’s wartime efforts. Following his military service, he dedicated 30 years of his career to the Canada Border Services Agency.

Family remained at the heart of Sisler’s life. He is remembered by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, a testament to the generations he helped shape.

Those who knew him speak of a man who carried history with humility and grace, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m., with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at Benner Funeral Home in Fort Erie. All members of the community are welcome to attend and pay their respects.

In lieu of flowers, the Sisler family gratefully accepts donations in Burd’s memory to the Fort Erie Legion Branch 71 or to a charity of your choice.

As Fort Erie says farewell, Sisler’s remarkable life and lasting spirit will not be forgotten.
