The Fort Erie Legion’s mural, a long-standing tribute to the community’s rich military history, has been brought back to life after a detailed restoration by local artist Tom Prow. Originally painted by Dave Sopha in 2003, the mural was in need of restoration after 20 years. Prow, who began the project in July, completed the work in just five weeks, drawing upon both his artistic skills and a deep personal connection to the piece.
For Prow, the mural represents more than an art project. His grandfather’s name is listed among the World War II soldiers depicted, making the restoration a family affair and a personal homage. Prow’s ties to the Legion and his family’s military history infused the project with a sense of purpose and honour.
The mural’s imagery captures significant symbols of Fort Erie’s military heritage. It includes the HMCS Fort Erie, representing its connection to Canada’s naval history. Another notable feature is the RCAF “Red Knight” T-33 Jet, which speaks to Fort Erie’s contributions to aeronautics and military aviation. Additionally, the mural showcases iconic local landmarks like Mather Arch and Old Fort Erie.
One of the biggest challenges Prow faced was ensuring that the restoration aligned seamlessly with Sopha’s original work. “My whole thing was repair, restore and preserve,” said Prow, “Keeping it accurate to the original artists vision and making no changes from what he originally did.”
The five-week process involved extensive planning and preparation to preserve the mural’s authenticity.
The restored mural stands as a testament to Fort Erie’s unwavering commitment to honouring its military heritage, ensuring that future generations can recognize the town’s contributions to Canada’s national defence.
When asked about the message he hopes the mural conveys to the community, Prow quickly responded, “Lest we Forget.” His words are a poignant reminder as the Legion prepares for the upcoming Poppy Campaign, a time of reflection and remembrance.
Thanks to Prow’s skill and personal dedication, the mural once again shines as a vibrant tribute to Fort Erie’s heritage, ready to inspire and connect the community for years to come.
