Crystal Beach recently saw a transformation on Derby Road, with the area dressed as a set for the acclaimed TV series The Handmaid’s Tale. For nearly three weeks, film crews worked to recreate a unique vision that fit the show’s dystopian world, with local businesses and residents alike embracing the excitement of being part of such a major production.
Filming took place over two days, but the meticulous setup process to capture Derby Road’s transformation was a lengthy endeavour. To make it look true to the series’ themes, props and vintage signs were placed along the road, while storefronts were modified to evoke the series’ stark, dystopian aesthetic.
Phil Smith, owner of Hotel Philco as well as a number of buildings on Derby Road, shared insights into why the location was chosen for filming, “The production team noted that the street’s look and feel were perfect for their vision. They mentioned it was a unique experience to have their set directly beneath their hotel, which streamlined logistics. With accommodations and staging areas so close, it allowed for an ideal setup.”
Business owners along Derby were thrilled to play a role in the project. Many were delighted by the transformation and welcomed the crew and production work into their shops and establishments. A few businesses reported an increase in foot traffic, with curious residents and fans of the show eager to catch a glimpse of the setup. Some shop owners even mentioned that the experience boosted their visibility within the community and that having The Handmaid’s Tale filmed on their doorstep was a welcome nod to Crystal Beach’s growing appeal as a film location.
“This was a big boost for the street, and the whole team was professional and respectful of our space,” expressed Aida Valoroso shop manager for Zigglers on Derby Road, “Elizabeth Moss who plays June had her greenroom in our upstairs area so we got to see a lot of her, and I got the go right into the gated community to watch some of the filming too!”
Nearby, the Crystal Beach Tennis & Yacht Club hosted additional scenes, with its pristine, exclusive setting altered to reflect the show’s dystopian world. Local residents were thrilled to see the popular venue once again gracing the screen, proud to recognize their town as a backdrop for one of television’s most talked-about series.
Reflecting on his experience, Smith shared, “The level of work and preparation that goes into even the smallest details is incredible. Often, they only have one shot to get it right! I was truly impressed by the skill of everyone involved. Seeing actors and actresses up close—people you usually see only on screen—was pretty cool too. I didn’t get to be an extra this time, but maybe next time!”
After filming wrapped up, local residents gathered to see Derby Road as it returned to its familiar self, the temporary set elements being carefully dismantled and the street slowly returning to its regular rhythm. However, a subtle buzz remains, with residents and businesses alike cherishing the brief yet memorable moment in the spotlight.
As The Handmaid’s Tale continues to captivate audiences worldwide, locals can now tune in with a unique connection, knowing that Crystal Beach played its part in the acclaimed series.
