The City of Port Colborne has approved a request for a Veterans’ Memorial Crosswalk in the downtown core.
The crosswalk has been installed running north and south on Clearance Street along Catherine Street. The total cost of the crosswalk is $3,100. The City will be covering the cost for the first crosswalk.
The request was made by the Royal Canadian Legion’s Port Colborne branch a few weeks ago, and staff have recommended one crosswalk at this time.
The Legion had initially requested four crosswalks, including one across from the steps leading to the city’s cenotaph at H.H. Knoll Park.
Mayor Bill Steele said the city will consider two other intersections along Clarance Street but only after planned improvements have been made to the area.
He added that the request for a crosswalk at the cenotaph steps won’t be possible because it contravenes Ministry of Transportation regulations, which only allow for crosswalks at controlled intersections.
Councillor Coleman Bagu asked staff to develop a policy going forward so the city will have a process for dealing with any similar requests in the future.
Alex Fazari, the Legion’s second vice president, said the Legion would be willing to work with the city and the BIA on sharing the cost of any future crosswalks.
Several other municipalities in the area have also installed crosswalks to honour veterans.
