What are the chances of travelling thousands of kilometres from home, boarding a cruise ship bound for the Caribbean, and discovering you’re surrounded by neighbours?
That’s exactly what happened to my husband Mike and I when we set sail aboard the Celebrity Silhouette with our friends Matt and Sue Ward, all of us from Fort Erie. We had booked a much-anticipated Caribbean getaway with Celebrity Cruises, looking forward to turquoise waters, warm breezes and a welcome break from winter weather.
What we didn’t expect was a hometown reunion on the high seas.
As we explored the ship and settled into vacation mode, we struck up casual conversations with fellow passengers. It didn’t take long before we made a surprising discovery. Not only were there two additional couples on board from Fort Erie, but none of the parties knew the others.
On a ship carrying thousands of guests, running into people from your own small town feels almost impossible. Yet there we were, laughing in disbelief and instantly bonding over familiar streets, mutual friends and shared local stories. In that moment, the world felt a lot smaller.
From there, chance encounters quickly turned into shared drinks and laughter-filled evenings. We spent sea days lounging on deck, taking in the ocean views and enjoying the ship’s entertainment. Evenings brought live music, drinks and plenty of opportunities to dance the night away. There’s something about being at sea that encourages conversation and connection, and we certainly embraced both.
What began as separate vacations soon felt like a group adventure.
