Nino D’Ambra earned a fifth-place showing among his peers – the best hairstylists in Canada – in a competition at the Allied Beauty Association’s “Revel in Beauty” show at the Toronto Convention Centre on April 15.
D’Ambra chose a business/professional look for his model Achille Canfora of Niagara Falls who was dressed in a suit to contrast with the more casual looks of his competition.
It was a risk he took to stand out from his peers and show off his skills and promote his Fort Erie business for people across Canada.
“They wanted more colour and trendy,” D’Ambra said. “I don’t want to be like everyone else.”
It was a timed contest and he had 30 minutes to complete his task. He chose a classic Caesar over comb, relying upon the old school craft with no electric clippers.
The job started in Fort Erie with colourist Maria Cottone Costa applying colour and highlights to prepare for the show.
D’Ambra started training in his home country of Italy at the age of 16. He moved to Canada 30 years ago and opened his salon in Fort Erie in 1997. His salon – Nino D’Ambra Hair and Aesthetics – is located at 231 Garrison Road.
