The Niagara Falls NDP has officially nominated Brian Barker as the candidate for the 2019 federal election.
Barker was nominated in a standing room-only meeting of the NDP Riding Association on Monday evening at the Niagara Falls Public Library.
Barker is a life-long teacher, coach, local activist, and vice-president of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario Niagara
“I grew up in a middle-class family and was able to work my way through university and ultimately start a career I could raise a family on,” he said. “I’m worried that those opportunities have disappeared for my kids.”
“We’re facing growing income inequality, a climate crisis, and the dismantling of our public healthcare system. While all of this is going on we have a Government roiled in a scandal, where it seems they offered special favours to rich corporate supporters,” he said.
“I’m running because I want local families to have their voices heard as we confront these challenges,” he said.
ETFO president Sam Hammond made a trip to the riding to speak about Barker’s history of fighting for education for children.
MPP Wayne Gates also had words of support for Barker. “I’ve stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Brian to fight education cuts – the people of our riding will appreciate a strong voice for families in Ottawa.”
