Council finalizes fire hall location

A new firehall will be built on a three-acre parcel of land between Ridge Road South and Prospect Point Road near Rebstock.

Fort Erie town council passed the bylaw Tuesday night to authorize the purchase of the vacant land near the Crystal Ridge Community Centre for an undisclosed amount. The terms of the deal remain confidential until a purchase agreement is signed.

Mayor Wayne Redekop declared a conflict of interest as his law firm might represent the vendor in the sale, Edward Arthur David.
Council passed the bylaw without discussion as the debate took place behind closed doors a week earlier.

The new fire hall will replace the halls in Ridgeway and Crystal Beach and amalgamate Stations 4 and 6 into one district.
Fire chief Ed Melanson reported to council in February that a new hall would cost $4.5 million with four truck bays, community hall, fitness room, kitchen and decontamination facilities.

With the consolidated fire stations, Melanson reported that the Town will save $3 million over 10 years by eliminating the need for replacement of some trucks and reducing the number of fire fighters serving the area.

Once the new station is built, the Town will have reduced the total volunteer fire fighter complement from 140 before the amalgamation of Stations 1 and 2 to around 100.
