Abby Barnhart, Danielle Waters and P.J. Bolger share a love of sport and represent Niagara proudly at national and provincial Special Olympics competitions.
Barnhart and Waters, both local Fort Erie ladies, have been to multiple provincial level events, and Barnhart competed nationally for the first time last August in Nova Scotia.
Barnhart loves the water and naturally took to competitive swimming when she started at the age of 12. She looks forward to a new season despite the long and hard training.
“If you want to succeed, you have to enjoy the sport,” and she is driven to succeed.
As well as competitive swimming, Waters trains in figure skating as well and has been doing so for the last 10 years.
“I do it because of the fun, music and I’m a bit competitive so it has that edge,” she said. “You have to do something you can be proud of.”
Bolger is also on the swim team with Barnhart, but is focused right now on his golf tournament next month. He’s been competing since he was 16.
Although it’s been hard to balance school and training, “It’s a lot of fun and a nice way to meet people.”
