Cannons recruiting new players for upcoming baseball season

Batter up!

It’s that time of year again for the Fort Erie Cannons to get their bats back swinging for pre-season workouts.

The three-time Niagara District Senior Men’s Baseball League (NDBA) Champions are holding their workouts at the Bulletproof Baseball Academy in Welland Sundays from March 24 to April 28, excluding Easter Sunday.

General Manager Clayton Hall says the Cannons are batting up for another great 24-game season, which starts the second week of May. Home games will be played Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. at Oakes Park.

“I like our chances of winning a third-consecutive NDBA league championship title in 2019,” Hall said.

The Cannons won the NDBA league championship in 2015, 2017 and 2018. They were named the Ontario Provincial B champions in 2015 and the Ontario A champions in 2018.

According to Hall, Ontario Baseball Association rules dictate division champs must move up to A level, meaning the Cannons must compete at the highest recreational level, AA this year.
“It will be difficult to take the AA crown, but we have a very talented team,” Hall said.

Most of the Cannons’ veteran players are returning this season, which is good news for the seasoned senior men’s team.

“We are only losing two to three players from last year’s squad, which we are actively pursuing replacements for,” Hall said.

New players ages 19 and older are welcome to come out to training at the baseball academy in Welland. College students can play free of charge with through Cannons sponsorship program.
The NDBA Senior Men’s League consists of seven teams including the Cannons. Other teams are the Welland Chiefs, Niagara Falls Expos, St. Catharines Cobras, Thorold Anchors, Merritton Alliance and Rose City Thorns.

Fort Erie’s baseball fans can follow the team on Twitter at @FECannons for any schedule changes or Cannons’ news.

The team’s stats are also available on the NDBA website at www.leaguelineup.com.

Hall is also looking for anyone willing to sponsor the team this year. Anyone interested in sponsoring the team can send an e-mail to Hall at chall6@cogeco.ca.
